Story: The autumn colors of 2001 were the most splendid of my career here in the eastern Sierra. Fall started early in mid September. Spectacular reds and oranges seemed to last forever. Most likely the long, dry Indian Summer allowed the color change to progress for weeks and weeks because there was no threat of rain to hasten the deterioration of the leaves.  On October 31st, I was still out along Bishop Creek as the season's first winter storm approached.
