Story
: In the fall of 2003, the colors from Mammoth north seemed better than Bishop Creek. I had scouted this grove of trees in 1978 and then returned late this fall day in 2003. Struck by the straight, white trunks of the aspen against clear blue sky with sunlit yellow leaves in the foreground, I used a wide angle 90 mm lens letting the tops of the trees converge towards the blue sky. Also, one of the many rules of photographic composition is to watch out for distracting patches of blue or white sky in tree images which, oftentimes, lead you straight out of your composition. The “patches” should be carefully used as part of the composition. The dark shapes in the upper right and left corners are effective here because your eye goes to them and then continues around the photograph.
