Story
: Unspoiled locations in Mammoth are harder  to come by, however a parcel at Minaret and Meridian still affords a view of Mammoth Mt. with  no visible development. Scouting was essential: it didn’t take long for snow banks to obliterate the roadside view during this enormous winter. On this January “bluebird powder” day, I struggled onto the 7’ bank and snow-shoed to my camera position. For a trackless mountain, I shot at 7:45 a.m., before the Panorama Gondola opened. I eliminated hot spots created by the sun through the trees, by placing shadows along the edge, allowing the eye to go to the Mountain rather than to light areas (or even leaving the image). A soft 2-stop split neutral-density filter lowers the contrast of shadows and bright new snow along Dragon’s Back & Top of the World.
