Story
: Having moved to Bishop from Mammoth, Mono Lake became too far away to visit easily; and there was always something closer that offered possibilities. After ten years in Bishop, we returned to Mammoth, and I began to scout the Lake more comprehensively. Generations of other photographers have worked on Mono Lake, and new ideas are hard to come by. In January 2005, on one of my follow-up trips to UCSF, I brought my camera for the drive home. The Pogonip Fog and afternoon light softened this scene of the old ranches on the west side of the Lake. I made this image a few feet from the road and still made it to Mammoth when school let out - a refreshing change from images requiring years of effort and careful timing to arrive at the best place with the right light.
