Story: I made this image without the numerous attempts usually required in my work. I had planned a workshop for the Martin Luther King weekend and waited on scouting locations until the day before. The temperatures dropped until Mono Lake was well below zero, but there was amazing light that morning. I had forgotten my face protection and had to make an agonizing decision about returning to my truck. Luckily for me, I made the call to not go back to my vehicle. In January the light is only right for seconds in many instances, and I barely had time to set up the camera, and make a series of exposures. Later that weekend, the temperatures dropped to -24F at Bodie during one of of our shooting sessions. I have no idea how anyone lived there in the mining years!
