Number: 10-5 Story: The
winter of 2009 - 2010 was huge here in Mammoth. The road to Red's
Meadow was still not open in late June, so my wife Margaret and I rode
bikes down to the trailhead. The middle fork of the San Joaquin River
was near peak run-off when we arrived. This is the classic view of
Rainbow Falls; the trail leads directly to the overlook. The best time
to photograph the falls from this location is about 1:30PM. The
strongest rainbows occurs about 16 degrees on a circle around a
straight line between the sun, the photographer and the subject. The
sun was just up above my right shoulder which meant the rainbow would
appear down and left from Rainbow Falls. |
