Number: 11-9 Story: Here
in the Sierra, the winter of 2011 was an amazing experience. The winter
wound up having the most snowfall ever recorded here in Mammoth. Late
in May, my family and I camped in the Owens Valley to escape from the
continuing storms. We made a hike up the North Fork of Big Pine Creek
and saw that the snow was more or less melted from the trail. I
returned the following week to Black Lake, and found it to be
completely frozen! After scouting in the afternoon, I realized
there were opportunities at the lake. Since we were close to summer
solstice, I had to set my alarm for 4:30AM. It was cold too. My coffee
was frozen after I had finished shooting! This image shows all of the
14,000 foot peaks of the Palisades from Mount Sill, to North Palisade,
and over to Thunderbolt Peak. |
