Number: 85-19 Story: This image was made in October, 20 years ago, during an early autumn trip to the High Country above Zion National Park in Utah. I had heard of an old dirt road that led for miles through aspen groves at 10,000’ above the Park. The season’s first snow storm had already occurred which turned the road into an endless mud quagmire, stripped the trees of color, and left this incredible grove of aspen with billowing clouds and clear blue skies. Using an old Ansel Adams trick, I set up on the roof of our truck, which was by now a mud-filled mess with chains and all. I used only two sheets of film and walked away without really knowing what a wonderful image had been captured. I got lucky and this one was all that was needed, but it would have been wise to make 3 or 4 to allow for Murphy’s Law. |
