Number: 89-3 Story: This image was made before “Ready Load Film Packets”, when each piece of film had to be loaded into a film holder in the darkroom. Scenes like this with big open skies and light areas inevitably ended up with spots and hairs all over the entire emulsion which were difficult to clean. After 15 years, this transparency had become quite dirty and almost unprintable using the old darkroom methods; but with Photo Shop, I could do digital spotting to clean up the dirt. After all of these years, I was still taken by the ethereal look and decided to bring it back using modern digital printing methods. I clearly remember that afternoon at Salton Sea - the old fence line receding into the horizon, the rising waters of the sea. The plain old Ektachrome 64 could make a surprisingly beautiful photograph. |
